Reference Assistant – Part-time
Summary: Part-time position provides comprehensive services through a variety of media and programs to library users. Primary responsibilities: implementing reference services; instructs and assists patrons in using the public online catalog, databases, Internet, eServices (eBooks, eReaders, eMagazines, etc.), and basic computer programs. Participates as team member with other public services staff in suggesting policies and carrying out the general mission of the library. Cross trained to work in Youth Services part-time and to work at Circulation when needed. Reports to the adult services supervisors. Acts as librarian in charge when full-time librarians are absent.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, Library Technical Assistant’s associate degree, or equivalent library experience required, with emphasis on reference preferred. Must have excellent customer service orientation and skills; aptitude for working with people of all ages. Capability for exercising good judgment and responsibility, including ability to organize own work and follow through with minimal supervision. Knowledge of authors, books, and age-appropriate reading levels; familiar with reference tools and techniques; working knowledge of different media and computer applications, including, but not limited to, word-processing, Internet, and online systems. Able to work flexible schedule, including hours not regularly scheduled, and some evenings and weekends. Willing to learn new skills as library products and services evolve. Willing to take on additional duties or projects as assigned by Reference Librarians.
Monday & Tuesday 5pm to 9pm at the Information Desk
Thursday 5pm to 9pm at Youth Services
Saturday 10:30am to 2:30pm at Youth Services (September through May)
Saturday 9am to 5pm (June through August)
Examples of responsibilities:
• Provides reference service
• Instructs and assists patrons on computers, ereaders, or other technologies
• Completes interlibrary loan requests
• Assists patrons with computer applications
• Assists patrons with eServices
• Completes order forms for items requested by patrons
• May make other recommendations for purchases
• As needed, assists with weeding and/or inventory projects
• If Peoria County resident, may serve as a deputy voter registrar
• Works part-time in Youth Services
• Cross trained to help at the Circulation Desk
• Other duties as assigned
Other: Uses photocopier, scanner, A-V equipment, microfilm reader, typewriter, computers, eServices as required, and assists patrons with the same.
